Eco-Friendly Fashion: Let's Help Our Planet Recover

What is eco-friendly fashion? Eco-friendly fashion is mainly about making clothes but taking into consideration the welfare of the environment, the health of the workers involved in the industry and the health of the consumers. Eco-friendly fashion clothes are made from organic raw materials; it does not use any harmful chemicals such as bleaches, and the like. They are often made from recycled materials and reused textiles. These clothes are made to last thus consumers can use them longer. Most importantly, the people who work in this industry are paid with a fair price and their working condition is really favorable.

Some people would raise eyebrows upon hearing eco-friendly fashion. As we would observe, anything natural and anything organic is a bit expensive. Come to think of it, shelling out a bit more than the usual cost of clothing wouldn’t cause too much harm on us because on the other hand we are actually helping our planet recover from all the damage which we ourselves have caused.

Another factor is the style of eco-friendly fashion. Can these clothes “with a conscience” be hip, chic and sexy? The answer is yes. Eco-friendly fashion has gone haute couture already. Top designers made this happen.

Linda Loudermilk, an L.A. based designer, has sustained a collection of organic clothing and jewelry which is earth and environment-friendly yet fashionable. Patagonia on the other hand has made a mark on making casual eco-friendly fashion collection. They make fleece out of recycled soda bottles. Also, Edun from Bono’s (U2) wife Ali Hewson created a socially-conscious collection of clothes. Nike, a sportswear icon, has been into eco-friendly fashion as well. They integrate organic cotton in their clothing and even have a whole line of 100% organic cotton clothes. Whole Foods also carry eco-friendly line, bags, hats, shirts and even toys.

Levi’s, a worldwide known jeans industry is now carrying eco-friendly fashion line. They are known as the Eco jeans distinguished by the small, green “e” stitch which are priced almost the same as that of their traditional jeans. There is also the Rawganique and Grace & Cello for the denims. Their prices are quite considerable. For shirts, tops and tanks, The Gap made its mark by producing unbleached, organic cotton men’s shirts. Turk + Taylor make cute graphic tees for both men and women. Shoes have gone eco-friendly as well. Consider trying Toepeeka flip-flops from Simple Shoes. They use organic cotton straps and recycled tire outsoles. To complete the eco-friendly fashion look, sling on a Lauren Bush burlap/cotton feed bag or the Open Tote and the Green Grocery which is made from recycled boat sails.

Now that you have completed your eco-friendly fashion look, go out and make a statement. You are very sure that you are one step forward to the right direction and that you are paying it forward to the environment and the earth as well.
